Curriculum Plans: Sixth Grade

Sixth grade is a transition. Is it upper elementary or the beginning of middle school? or both? It certainly is a year of endings and beginnings. For our family, sixth grade marks the end of elementary math level and some formal Latin lessons. However, in sixth grade, our children start learning more complex science lessons and reading higher level literature. It is a year when as the child's abilities increase, our expectations increase, too.

So, what do we teach and what do we use for 6th grade courses? Our family's choices are outlined below.

Bible

A favorite Bible curriculum for our family is the What We Believe series, published by Apologia. Our daughter will complete the series this year by working through Volume 3 and 4.

Who Is My Neighbor?
What on Earth Can I Do?

Grammar and Writing

Grammar and writing are essentials. We approach them with thorough curricula choices.

Progressing with Courage, English 6, published by Rod and Staff
Writing With Skill, published by Peace Hill Press

Spelling and Vocabulary

Continuing with both of these series:
Spelling Workout, Level F, published by Modern Curriculum Press
Word Roots, A2, published by The Critical Thinking Co.

Literature

Our sixth grader will read through
The Jungle Book, by Rudyard Kipling
The Secret Garden, by Frances Hodgson Burnett
Around the World in Eighty Days, by Jules Verne

For each book, she will work through the accompanying Veritas Press comprehension guide.

The Jungle Book
The Secret Garden
Around the World in Eighty Days

She will read a few other books as well. Note: Veritas Press places The Secret Garden comprehension guide in their fifth grade literature. We are choosing to use it during sixth grade.

Math

This year she will complete the last level of Horizons elementary math curriculum.

Horizons Math, 6th Grade, published by Alpha Omega

History

Continuing with Diana Waring's history curriculum, this year will focus on the years between AD 30-1799.

Romans, Reformers, Revolutionaries
Digging Deeper, Vol. 2, CD set

Science
Just like last year, we will participate in a science co-op. Sixth graders will work through two chemistry books from the God's Design for Chemistry and Ecology series, published by Answers In Genesis.

Properties of Matter, by Debbie and Richard Lawrence
Properties of Atoms & Molecules, by Debbie and Richard Lawrence

The class also works through The Fallacy Detective, by Nathaniel Bluedorn and Hans Bluedorn

Latin

Sixth graders in our family finish this series with Primer C.

Latin for Children, published by Classical Academic Press.

Aesthetics

This year, we'll study art, music, and poetry related to our history studies. One of the books our sixth grader will use is

Picture That! Knights & Castles, by Alex Martin

Physical Education
Swimming and volleyball are two interests for our sixth grader. Both will be incorporated into her school year.

  2. We are going on our 3rd year using God's Design for science we absolutely love it for our large family. You might want to check out the Center for Lit.'s Reading Roadmaps, it's discussion based for literature. Just a thought because you are using a lot of great Classical resources. Have a wonderful day. Kyle
